This paper is one of a series that examines the origins of some of the largest and most important Internet content and applications providers (ICAPs). The companies in the series include Yahoo!, Amazon, eBay, Google, Skype, Baidu, MySpace and YouTube.
The reason for focusing attention on the origins of these companies is to learn more about the workings of the ICT Ecosystems within which they have been born. Significantly, almost all of the major ICAPs are from the US, including, with two exceptions, the companies mentioned in the last paragraph. The exceptions are Skype which originated in Europe and Baidu which was born in China. The study of origins helps to understand why US companies have been so dominant in this layer of the ecosystem.
The ICAPs are also of interest because of the entrepreneurs responsible for their establishment. Almost all of these entrepreneurs have become household names as a result of the fame of their companies. Entrepreneurship is one of the themes to which this website is devoted and one section is dedicated to the study of entrepreneurs.
